A small green oasis in the heart of London, between Theobalds Road and High Holborn, formed in the late 17th century when houses were built by Dr Barbon to the dismay of the lawyers in Gray's Inn for spoiling their country view. It has undergone various incarnations in the meantime but the original shape has remained. The railings removed during WW2 were restored in 1990. Large London plane trees dominate with various other trees having been added to add interest at different seasons. There are flower beds around the circumference with two crescent shaped beds at either end and a round central bed. The small cafe, originally a gardener's shelter, provides refreshments. The history boards at each of the four entrances explore the history of the Square.
The organisation with legal responsibility for Red Lion Square Gardens is Camden Council.
