Marlborough Sports Garden was gifted to the people of Southwark in 1920 by the Duchess of Marlborough, Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan, who decreed that "Surplus land from an insanitary area between Borough High Street and Red Cross Street should be used as a recreation ground". It is unique in the densely populated London Bridge area - offering free or low cost access to open space, sports courts and coaching to its community. The park also plays host to community events that promote sports and enjoying open spaces. It is managed by Bankside Open Spaces Trust, an environmental and volunteering charity working to provide outstanding green spaces and outdoor activities that enhance the health and wellbeing of urban communities.
