Facilities

Alexandra Recreation Ground, is a small but charming park near to Penge East Station. It is a park of 2 parts. The first, bordered by Victorian houses, containing an exciting fenced, tree lined play area for the under 10s, with a good variety of swings, climbing frames etc.. There is also a large grassed area great for kite flying, ball games, dog walking. At the end of this area, paths lead into the main park, which features a beautiful Victorian fountain and the club house of West Beckenham Bowling club which celebrated its centenary in 2019. Penge is gaining a name for its colourful street art and The Friends together with the bowls club and the Seymour Villa Football club commissioned a beautiful, colourful mural which celebrates the biodiversity of the park, also the sporting activities which take place there. Seymour Villa FC run popular football sessions for all ages. There are some beautiful and unusual trees in Alex Rec, including a Yew tree which provides a den for children to play and hide in.The Friends of the Park have planted thousands of spring bulbs making the Rec a joy to visit in the Spring.see also a mini orchard and some saplings.. There is a long Rose border, containing dozens of fragrant heritage roses. The Friends group recently installed a bug hotel and hope to create a wild flower, unmown area this year. In normal times,The Friends organise two free concerts each year: Music in the Park, the summer band concert, and Carols in the Park in December. Other community events organised by the Friends include Spring walks, Bat walks, and an Easter egg hunt, Historically there has been a wonderful and very popular children's paddling pool. This has now become too aged for renovation and the Friends are working with the Parks Managers (id verde) to advocate for a community water feature in the future. The Rec is very popular with dog walkers and runners, the benches providing resting place for strollers and observers of life.
