A Pets As Therapy dog and handler (c) PAT

A partnership between the Friends of Kneller Gardens , Pets As Therapy and Twickenham Council has introduced therapeutic dog walking in the park, specifically for people with dementia.

“Walk with Ralph” builds on the success of Pets As Therapy’s work, but with the added value of engagement with nature, while widening the number and diversity of park users. The therapy triggers memories and keeps people active.

A spokesperson for Pets As Therapy said:

“We quite often find that people with dementia respond in ways they don’t with medication or other interventions, it is a different type of therapy a dog offers.”

Parks are also being used by the Alzheimer’s Society for Memory Walks, including some night-time strolls. The unique settings trigger memories and captivate participants in new ways with positive results. The next one scheduled for London is in Battersea Park in March:

GLOW London, Friday 13 March 2020. A 5.5km walk suitable for wheelchairs. Registration:£10.00 (under 16s free). Arrive from 6:30pm.
